Quality assurance system that encompasses the entire manufacturing process of products and services. In other words, it evaluates and certifies a quality management system instead of products or services alone. When a supplier is certified through an objective and independent evaluation of a third party organization, it leads to trust from consumers and the organization. Certified companies must document and practice the work process according to the manual.
This system was introduced when, after WWII, the procurement department of the US military applied management of production system as the US military standard in order to reduce flawed munitions. Later, with increasing need of internationally common quality management system, ISO developed ISO 9000 series based on national standards of the US, UK, and Canada. After a series of reVisions, in 2000, the definition of a product included service businesses and, in the total quality control, PDCA (plan, do, check, act) were included and became the standard of organization activities.
Recently, the 2008 reVision has been completed and applied to ISO9001: 2008.
